The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.
Review:
This book was so close to perfection. Seriously, seriously close. It had action, so many emotions, and at no time while reading did I feel like this book was going to drag.
But what stopped me from giving it 5 stars?
Those few little chapters where Ember's life is in stake and all she cares about is making sure the bad guys don't get hurt. Really. That was it. And maybe the fact that she couldn't comprehend why they should have been killed. It's small, yes, but I feel like when you're in a dystopian world that's meant to be dangerous, the characters should understand the stakes and realise some things have to be done. Sadly, Ember didn't understand that and that kinda killed half a star for me.
Other than that, I felt like Article 5 was a really good book. There wasn't a time when it lagged and the world-building was incredibly done. I'd recommend this book to everyone, honestly. Unless you don't like dystopians then stay very far away from it. Haha.
Nonetheless, amazing novel and I'll certainly be back for the sequel.
